For what it's worth things have never really been that different. The same forces have been undermining this country for (at least) 200 years, it's just that the internet made it much easier for the public to see. So unlike your ancestors at least you're not completely in the dark about it all.
Senators should not be allowed to be in for 47 years and they should put in term limits for everyone. Too little is not enough and too much usually becomes corrupt.
