Romans got away from a degenerate monarchy, and a few hundred years later, they became an empire under Augustus. There was a difference between the kingship of ancient Rome and the "principate" of Augustus.
Similar to how Louis XVI was overthrown, but the Republic failed and Napoleon became emperor...with a different flavor altogether though.
