The United States is a republic, it is not a nation. I too was led to believe it was a nation for much of my life as this seems to have been a concept that used to be emphasized more in the past before it became clear that the United States is actually fairly balkanized already and does not share one culture, which is a characteristic of a nation, in fact I believe 9/11 was orchestrated to achieve this false sense of one national culture for a while. Honestly I feel a lot of bad things were done under Bush under a false pretenses of an american nation with a single culture. While Trump is a nationalist he staunchly believes in the republic concept and recognizes the regional cultural differences and the rights of states. I think there is an evolving concept of the role of the American republic in the world and it's different from the Republican bullshit of the past. The current Trump movement is not seeking to take away rights, hell Oregon just legalized all drugs and I don't think anyone cares since it's their state. Self determination is one of the concepts of this republic and the anti-gay, overly authoritarianism of the past is not a goal of the Trump movement.
