From my understanding (and I could be wrong). StartPage is a raw version of Google, with no bullshit. It doesn't account for your history, your IP's history, your computer, router's history, your location, your local interests, etc
Example: If you search a word like "Cardinal" on StartPage it would give you info about the bird, or in the church and the most popular world wide results for the word.
But if you searched the term on Google, it might look to see if you have any history as a football fan and suggest to you "Arizona Cardinals", or if you're located in Missouri maybe it'll suggest to you "St.Louis Cardinals" first.
Maybe I'm wrong in my understanding of the tracking and data StartPage removes from the Google search engine, or maybe I should say, doesn't add to it.
On StartPage's website this is what it says > You can’t beat Google when it comes to online search. So we’re paying them to use their brilliant search results in order to remove all trackers and logs. ** Now to my point:** When I search "Donald" on Google, I get Donald Trump....but when I search it on StartPage, Trump isn't recommended....when I search "Donald Trum" the only recommendation I get is "Donald Trumbell"
Searching "Who won the ele" gives me "who won the elections in the philipines"
Searching "presidential electio" gets me "presidential dollar" as top recommendation and several others that aren't "election"
Searching "donald trump presidential election 202" it doesn't give me 2020 it gives me 1988, 2004, 2008, 2012,
Searching "Joe B" gets me "Joe Biden"
So my question is Is this StartPage unintentionally exposing some censorship going on in the Google search engine right now?
The way I understand it, Startpage uses Google search results, but acts as a go-between. So you type your search term in, send it to Startpage, then Startpage searches Google with your search term, Google sends Startpage the results, and Startpage sends the results to you. The whole point of this is so that Google cannot see your computer, IP address, or location directly, and therefore can't track you. Google only sees Startpage's computers.
The company that runs Startpage used to have a site called ixquick.com, which actually existed before they came out with Startpage.com. Ixquick did the same go-between function, but it used results combined from several different search engines, not just Google. Many times you could find things on Ixquick that you couldn't find on Startpage (because of Google censorship). For some reason, they discontinued Ixquick a few years ago.
One of the things Startpage and Ixquick have in common is that they don't save any identifying information about your computer, IP address, or location. They don't keep any logs of user data.
I'm not sure why you are getting different results for the same search term when you use Startpage compared to Google directly. Maybe Startpage's computers that talk to Google are located in another country, and Google is serving up different results for that country. If I remember correctly, the Ixquick/Startpage company was located somewhere in Europe.
Thank you
Why would Donald Trum not suggest Donald Trump?
I don't know, best guess is just Google playing petty little games.
