When Lincoln abolished slavery, there was vicious opposition too. The vicious mob, is often wrong, and sometimes outright evil. That’s why we have the constitution with the bill of rights, the judiciary, because unchecked democracy or worse mob rule can be dangerous and destructive.

The US is in a dark battle for its soul.
