I work with disabled adults. When we are trying to change a particularly bad behavior, it always gets much much worse before it gets better.

This is their last gasp.

Stefan Molyneux has explained it so clearly that even I was able to understand it. When a grifter sees his meal ticket threatened, it is an existential threat. There are people in the world who have no idea what it means to support themselves by actually being useful to other people, who regard any demand that they stand on their own feet and support themselves useful, as a mortal threat to their existence.

So they will do literally anything to keep the money coming. Anything. They view anyone who comes near it the way you would view a lion attacking your children. No conscience intervenes in the matter - it is naked self preservation and blinding fear. Doesn't excuse any of it. Does explain the psychology.
