I do think that's the crux of what happened. They anticipated a Trump win, released suppression polls to the public, and privately did polling which still underestimated Trump's majority. They were caught off guard.

I think they genuinely believed they controlled Hispanic, Black, and Asian voters almost completely, and that was the major blind spot.
