They could have, ya know, whistle-blown.

There are so many people out there who don't feel that it is their place in life to expose wrongdoing. They believe that if they keep quiet in the moment, they can talk about it later in an expose, allowing them to keep their career on track and later get the relief on their conscience that they have pent up from not doing anything when it mattered.

Edit: if your employer tells you to resign over a serious issue, let them fire you and collect evidence. Don't let them bully you into entering into the "public record" that it was your decision to leave. It's generally a serious civil violation to retaliate against whistleblowers. If you resign on your own, there's no evidence of retaliation.
