Corrupt officials tried voter intimidation and locked themselves up in the jail with ballots and refused oversight. After a black American was shot in the back, running away, after being punched by an officer with brass knuckles, people got involved. Concerned citizens, many WWII veterans, armed themselves and surrounded the jail. Read up on history
