It is why while I do not use 4chan I feel they have the best UI. Every comment is seen and there are no upvotes or downvotes. You can still see what is most popular by number of replies but they do not "hide" unpopular comments.
Exactly, they could try implement some creative stuff to incentivize people to associate their number and account, but completely locking their service behind that is dumb, even more since like other guys have already you can just use a virtual phone, or maybe even those webs that works receiving text messages and open the account with that, is not like trolls that are already losing their time won't know or do that.
Try downloading one of those free texting apps. They suck without being a paid user and every message you send has something like "-sent using TAPATALK" attached to it. However, you can probably use it to just receive a confirmation code to get into the app.
The whole thing is about the choice to give or not your phone number, how hard is just to let you open your account and after that if you want to give it to them then they put a mark on your profile that shows that you are a user with a phone number associated to your account so you're "kind of a more reliable" user.
