PSA

Everyone should be using Youtube-dl. It's a .exe file that someone linked below that you use locally with Command Prompt on your computer to download youtube videos. Search up a tutorial on youtube, it's pretty easy.

And people were wondering why the RIAA took down youtube-dl ahead of this.

That absolutely can't be a coincidence. People have been using ytdl for years, and the flimsy complaint they made was based on examples in the ytdl documentation. The RIAA also attached an old case from several years ago out of Germany showing why they have the authority (they don't) to take it down. Why wouldn't they have taken action earlier?

I don't think they even tried that hard. It struck me as someone "in the biz" getting a phone call from one of their personal swamp friends asking them for a quick favor, knowing it wouldn't really hold up but would buy them some time.

Not only that, but the RIAA was sending DMCA takedowns to a bunch of sites that do the download for you, and I think they even took down some of the browser extensions.

But yeah, I think you're right. This smells of something kinda questionable along those lines. Definitely not a coincidence.

I read an interesting legal theory that it likely wouldn't stand up in court, because the parts of the DMCA they claimed were the reason for the takedowns almost certainly wouldn't stand up in court. And if the only infringing parts were the unit tests, I don't see why that couldn't be fixed or that a warning couldn't be added that required user input to declare they weren't going to use it to download copyrighted content or something.

I've used it to mirror a bunch of public domain stuff in the past and some YT channels I like because of their content being taken down for "violating" YT guidelines. Which these days isn't that hard to do...
