Half the reason our district opened up this week was due to complaints coming in from parents who didn't want to do distance learning anymore -- they'd rather send their kids to school with masks on and locked in one room all day than stay home with them -- there was significant demand for the schools to open full time. It got compromised down to half days, and there are still people upset.

My husband and I have been teachers/substitutes; there were kids (not one, not two!) showing up to school in the same clothes for the entire wee -- stinky, dirty, the school let some kids come in and clean up before school started, provided toiletries -- that's how bad it is. Kids showing up to school in the middle of winter with no socks on (and they walked to school) -- the district started calling on really cold days because some parents were letting their kids walk to school in freaking shorts and sandals in zero degree wind chills. Half the reason our district opened up this week was due to complaints coming in from parents who didn't want to do distance learning anymore -- they'd rather send their kids to school with masks on and locked in one room all day than stay home with them -- there was significant demand for the schools to open full time. It got compromised down to half days, and there are still people upset.
We have a lot of shitty parents; it just is.
I know. I had to sit next to one of those neglected kids. She smelled like a sewer and none of the teachers seemed to bother getting to the reason why.
Poor girl. Broke my heart looking back later when I had grown past being a kid and realized she wasn't just "smelly girl" she was a neglected child with drunks for parents.
Oh, trust me; we know the reasons why (it depends upon the school system you're in quite often too, never forget that) -- and we're mandated court reporters...what Family Services does with it, however, is quite out of our hands. And these parents are usually well versed in how to get around the system. I've seen parents who were basically good, but just had some problems at home, who were given a hard time because they refused to bend the knee; the kiss asses got more aid and were never bothered. Also to be noted, it's often better if they stay where they are at than to go into the foster care system.
