It actually feels more comfortable for me when I tuck the stock to my cheek. It's used as a backup if the scope/red dot/holo goes out, just turn 45 and you have a backup sight.
Yes. The idea is if your optic goes down, all you'd have to do is turn your rifle to the side slightly instead of taking the time to remove the dead scope.
Magpul mags are great, too. Very reliable. many special ops units switched to them. Just make sure that if you leave them loaded, that you have the dust covers-it keeps the rounds from exerting pressure on the feed lips, possibly deforming them on long term storage.
If you go metal mags, them make sure you have the latest anti-tilt followers.
I've switched from a red dot to 1x prism scope because I know even if the battery is dead when I pick it up the prism scope will still have an unlit reticle.
Iron sights were the primary mount for military so you could beat them and put them in storage without worrying about functionality. Now, usually iron sights are to back up battery-operated optics. With red-dots or holos, you just sight through the optic.
Unless you have a big scope for distance, canted irons are unnecessary.
Look up videos on "bore sighting" it will get you on paper and save a shit load of time. Start at 25 yards, then 50 yards, then wherever you want to set it.
Did you have those from the Before Times or, if you just got them, were they crazy expensive because of the ammo shortage? Gotta keep them in a safety deposit box lol
First time gun owner here too. The gunstore sold me 1 box of 9mm since I bought a gun from them, but they aren't selling rounds by themselves because they have so little supply.
I obviously need a lot of practice and the fact that I only have 50 shots and can't find more bullets anywhere is discouraging.
Thanks, never heard of this product before. Bought one, I'm not sure if I want to buy the matching target board for it yet but this should help me. I need to get my scrawny chicken arms strong enough to keep the gun sturdy and dry firing isn't giving me feedback if I'm steady when I pull the trigger.
I agree with Slyhillary, you should get this now. iTarget is the one I have. Tip: skip the target stand and app. If you purchase the laser bullet alone (~$70). you can point the firearm at a target on the wall or wherever and you can see where the laser hits and any movement you had during trigger pull. I use it daily and is an excellent training tool.
You can dry fire practice without any thing besides the gun. With a CONFIRMED empty gun pointed in a safe direction get a good sight alignment then focus on the front sight. Squeeze the trigger trying not to move the sights. Repeat many times. There are other exercises but this is a fundamental
I've been doing this but I've also read conflicting opinions that dry firing can damage your firearm, and some opinions that there is no danger in dry firing. I only trained on a M16 for a single day (thanks USAF) so I feel nervous about trigger discipline, not putting my finger in front of the barrel when pulling back the slide, etc etc.
I've been just practicing dry firing since I have caught myself putting my finger in the trigger well when I shouldn't, and I really scared the shit out of myself when I tried to lock the slide back on my Glock 19 and realized my hand was covering the barrel.
In the Air Force, we were taught to be super safe around firearms, how to properly assemble and dissemble them quickly, but barely ever taught how to operate them. I understand that if a wrench turner like me (I was Avionics) needed to arm up we were probably fucked, but I still wish I received more training in small arms.
My son is a GAC troop currently in the Pacific. His experience with ARs was similar to yours. During his BMT they trained on assembly several times with M16A2s but then changed to brand new M4s just before the test. Everything was tight on the new gun vs the M16 that you could almost shake apart so that slowed him down a bit. LOL
You are right to be concerned about covering the muzzle with your hand. That is a big fail. Just adjust your grip on the slide and keep training your brain to do it right. I pinch the rear of the slide vs going over the top at the front on larger guns like the G19
There are firearms that should not be dry fired. Primarily this applies to guns chambered for rimfire cartridges such as .22 long rifle. A Glock 19 or any similar striker fired pistol may be dry fired without concern. I shoot competitively and I can tell you there are guys whose Glocks have 10s of 1000s of dry fire cycles and they function just fine.
If you haven't done it yet do some dime drills. Put a dime or a quarter on the front sight post and pull the trigger. It shouldn't fall off. Do that until you can pull the trigger maybe 3-5 times in a row with it on there. If you go to zero and you can't do a shot group it zeroing you sights won't matter.
this^^^ you must be able to put together consistent shot groups. good firing position, control your breathing, squeeze the trigger with your finger tip. always fire at the bottom of your breath (at the end of exhale).
It sneezes black powder for every pew. My Glock owning brother made fun of me for that. He was like "My Glock doesn't let that shit out like that Jesus! This thing pukes powder!"
I lost all my guns in a boating accident last week. I no longer carry or possess firearms. You can't see them, I don't have any, and nobody can prove that I do.
Right. I get that's the inside joke with all gun owners.
Question, can I legally say that to the police and shit? Is that an acceptable legal limbo to prevent confiscation? Or will they just laugh and shove me out of the way, find my shit, then put my ass in jail?
Get rid of those red ones and move your rear sight all the way to the back. Also. Your ammo is probably bad and won't group, send it to me and I'll safely dispose of it.
When this is over, we need to have a talk. Good start, questionable middle, glad you're getting training. I appreciate your enthusiasm for iron sights, but let's talk about decently priced optics to get you through the range or at least the first few weeks of WW3, Civil War 2: The Reckoning, and Vietnam 2: The one with Jim Caviezel.
It gets you on paper... at like 10 yds. I don't even see how they are so far off since you can spin them and still get the same spot. It will save you the embarassment of hitting the target hanger or someone else's target at least.
That was me when I first went through marksmanship in boot camp. I couldn’t hit the side of a barn.
Come to find out that I had trouble maintaining a consistent sight picture (hands in the same place, comb to the same point on my cheek, head same position and distance back from the rear sights, etc.) and I also didn’t hold the weapon tight enough into my shoulder.
Our NCOs would also have us practice good trigger pull by balancing a dime on the end of the barrel to get us to not jerk involuntarily when pulling the trigger (dry fire - no rounds). Don’t anticipate.
When you do that, you should have a cluster of three rounds (your ‘shot group’) in the same general area.
You can then adjust your sights to bring your shot group to line up to where it needs to be.
bolt should be locked to the rear, magazine should be removed and weapon should be on safe. Also, unless you're going to be doing an NBC qual take those super visible and completely unnecessary red canted iron sites off. Other then that, nice looking rifle and a good amount of ammo for practice there.
So you just need another gun for the extra sights. lol I was just picking, I’m just happy you got some 2A action. Very important to learn how to use them. Just an opinion, if you’re gonna go with canted BUIS that would normally be ran with a magnified optic. The regular BUIS could be co-witnessed through the red dot. Go with a good optic. Vortex has good budget sights. If you wanna go big get an aimpoint, eotech, trijicon. Nice start though, 🇺🇸
In all seriousness, 45s are cool, but you will never use them unless you mount red dot/scope and it gets damaged. It’s just not a natural or quick adjustment. Don’t waste a bunch of money on expensive red dot, low level OTW brand, mid level Sightmark Ultra Shot M spec, Holosun would my choice. I prefer large or square view box
Theres a good reason everyone is using red dots or low power variables. A bushnell TS-25 is a quality bargin dot. Sight adjustment is easy but has a learning curve. MOA = 1 inch @ 100 yards. Extrapolate - 1/4 inch @ 25 yard. 2 in @ 200 yard. So 1/4 moa sight adjustments @ 25 yard = 1/16th of an inch per click. If you are off 2 inches right = 32 clicks counterclockwise on windage. Milspec AR's should be 2-2.5 MOA spread. When you get close you need 3 shot averages for every sight adjustment.
😂 Brothers from Another Mother. RMR better for a 45 canted sight or pistol imo, the eotech holo is a great 1X, add to that the 3x magnification and u have a great utility optic. Bit pricy of a setup, Vortex is solid for thee budget optics. their 1-6 / 1-8x is great!
Where the hell did you get this? I've been looking for a decent tac. rifle for MONTHS. All nearby gun dealers, cabelas, and bass pro are sold out at all times.
I'm on Columbus, OH. The store was Vance's Outdoors (columbus branch, there's some other branches around the city). I checked their sight a month ago and they had AR15s and GOOD 12 gauge shotguns available. They must be high-priority for restock with suppliers.
My rifle is a Radical Firearms 16" Socom 5.56mm AR rifle. My veteran bro was with me and he pointed straight to that. Must be the Socom hand guard.
God I wish I could afford an ar right now. I had my eyes on one a good six months ago but bills and family problems come first. So I had to wait and now I cant afford one. Their all going up because suddenly everyone is buying guns ( a good thing for sure but sucky for me personally)
I'm not gunless, I have my 40 caliber handgun and a mossberg but still.
If you have any Military affiliation, go to expert voice and sign your ass up for sweet deals on scopes and shit. Hopefully that will save you some cash. Get your physical fitness ready bud.
canted ironsights and normal ironsights? bro
Yo dawg I heard you like ironsights so I got you some backup ironsights for your ironsights
Omg this comment killed me.
The iron sights sight the other sights. Manually.
I look through both at the same time. Elite SNIPUR!
I know! I'm new at this! I have no idea how to zero them either! DX
Wait, hol up... those red things are sight? And you're suppopsed to tilt your gun sideways and sight down the barrel with the gun sideways and shoot?
Good news. Barrels are round.
Yes - I run a red dot at 45 with iron sights down the middle. I don't have 2 sets of iron sights.
Congrats! Love the rifle.
Go buy a decent red dot sight for it, like a holosun, vortex, eotech or aimpoint. Make sure it's fully cowitnessed.
Buy a flashlight for it.
Buy a sling.
Buy at least 10x regular steel mags.
All the extra stuff is cool and all, but you need to learn the basics before you concern yourself with the canted iron sights.
Ask Kyle Rittenhouse how important a sling is. Hint: It's bigly
Thanks. I have half of that. Looks like I'm going in the right direction.
Also a good choice.

Bore sighting. Okay thank you
http://preparedgunowners.com/2016/03/17/how-to-zero-your-ar-15-for-50-200-yards-at-just-10-yards/
I zero at 50 for the trajectory (50/200 parabola)
Don’t know if I’m lucky but I’ve always been able to hit paper at 50 yards unadjusted. Then it’s just a matter of a few clicks.
go to range, fire 6 shots while maintaining the same exact site picture and breathing from 25 meters away.
make adjustments after that, rinse and repeat.
me must be expecting to have to wear a NBC mask during the fight. no other reason.
One set for each eye, silly!
Wouldn't canted sights be useful if you're firing prone, with longer mags?
no. canted sites are for wearing a chem, bio, radiological mask.
Thanks for the clarification. TIL something I should have googled in the first place.
no problem. 13+ years as a trigger puller and the guy that blows stuff up for the army gave me some knowledge.
Artillery or EOD? Also, thank you for your service.
Ranger (5+yrs), EOD (8.5yrs)
no worries, my service will never end. my oath was lifetime for me.
Probably EOD qualified, but sounds like he was a breecher at some point.
Well I heard there were monsters in Chernobyl so...
*cheeki breeki intensifies\
you planning on fighting for america in chernobyl?
Chernobyl: American Menace II: Nuclear Boogaloo
I'm confused. Why do you have 2 sets of iron sights?
I'm new and scared of my own rifle and I think I wet myself (._. )
Thank you. That's super helpful.
Thank you. Saved!
Alright!
Now it's my turn!
Headline: Local man dies after trying to flex.
Thatis so adorable....
LMAO
😁😁
That's a beautiful cardboard box you have there. Full of goodies.
I figured I would need a lot of rounds to go from 'suck' to 'okay i guess'
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Practice makes perfect!
Did you have those from the Before Times or, if you just got them, were they crazy expensive because of the ammo shortage? Gotta keep them in a safety deposit box lol
September. Ammoseek.com
Glad you're starting somewhere, Pede!! Get a Peak Optic ;)
he's already reached peak optic with dual ironsights.
I'm so hard, I see through BOTH SIGHTS AT ONCE @[email protected]
It's fucking beautiful. Back up your irons with irons. Always be prepared.
After the last few days, the humor in this thread is medicinal.
I cant breathe.
dont swallow all the fentanyl
But can you breef?
You can dual sight those at a 22.5 degree angle. 3D vision bro.
First time gun owner here too. The gunstore sold me 1 box of 9mm since I bought a gun from them, but they aren't selling rounds by themselves because they have so little supply.

That's where I got my rounds. It finds ALL THE DEALS.

I need to get my scrawny chicken arms strong enough to keep the gun sturdy and dry firing isn't giving me feedback if I'm steady when I pull the trigger.
I've heard of those. Maybe I'll buy that after Christmas... or no Black Friday would have deals. I'll look into that!

ammoseek.com is your best friend when finding ammo :)
You can get better deals on gunbroker
gun-deals.com search by caliber, pretty. good site
You can dry fire practice without any thing besides the gun. With a CONFIRMED empty gun pointed in a safe direction get a good sight alignment then focus on the front sight. Squeeze the trigger trying not to move the sights. Repeat many times. There are other exercises but this is a fundamental

Off-set iron sights are typically used when you have a longer range optic mounted on top. No need for two sets of irons. Save those for another build.
Okay. I plan to budget for a scope next year for now. I'll stick with the top sights for now.
Thanks for the advice bow emoji but it's text what am i even
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84KBHdpKB1c&t=1209s
this guy gives you a lot of good info.
Saved!
There are instructional. I believe 1/4 turn on the front post is 1/4 moa. I forget I set my co-witness sights to my tuned red-dot.
I understood exactly none of that. But thank you anyway!
My AR rifle class is December 8th.
This is good advice but different then i was taught. I was taught by putting a cleaning rod on the tip of the barrel and some denomination of coin.
Some other military pede please help me remember for this young lad.
Yeah that actually a better way to do it. Longer the length the better you have to be.
this^^^ you must be able to put together consistent shot groups. good firing position, control your breathing, squeeze the trigger with your finger tip. always fire at the bottom of your breath (at the end of exhale).
How many BUIS? ALL OF THEM!!!!
I was so BUISY buying all the things I didn't realize how dumb I really was until it was done >_<
It happens. I just spent two days assembling a cart full of salsa and then I got to the shipping and it cost more than the salsa and I stopped there.
So anyway, I started blasting...
Bro take off the canted sights. You're looking like a Bernie bro lol
Boston Accent Weah gonna take it from da millionaires and billionaires!
Some Dude: Sir! Aren't you a millionaire now?
...
Boston Accent Weah gonna take it from da billionaires.
So that’s where all the ammo went
I... I might need a lot of ammo ( ._.)
I feel like quoting the climax of Moby Dick all of a sudden...
I spy with my set of blue eyes, something brass in a box I want.
No, is my ammo do not take!
Ammo is hard AF to find right now. Shelves are bare. Need 5.56 badly. And a couple of bundles of 30-06.
Don't look at stores!
Go to Ammoseek.com! I got all of my NATO rounds using that site!
Radical Firearms 16" Socom 5.56mm AR rifle and a Walther PPQ M2.
Really looking forward to my CCW class in 3 weeks and my AR rifle class in December.
My bro was with me when picking out the AR. He saw the SOCOM setup and was all "GET THIS." lul XD
Great choice. Looks great.
It's a good compromise of solid with good friction and accepting a pin and hammer.
Son, I'm afraid you have a condition...
It sneezes black powder for every pew. My Glock owning brother made fun of me for that. He was like "My Glock doesn't let that shit out like that Jesus! This thing pukes powder!"
lul
Next year ._.
Man how I love this country
I lost all my guns in a boating accident last week. I no longer carry or possess firearms. You can't see them, I don't have any, and nobody can prove that I do.
Right. I get that's the inside joke with all gun owners.
Question, can I legally say that to the police and shit? Is that an acceptable legal limbo to prevent confiscation? Or will they just laugh and shove me out of the way, find my shit, then put my ass in jail?
Answer= "Shall Not Be Infringed" also see "free men do not ask permission"
The later.
You’re missing a set of iron sights, my dude. You should have canted iron sights on both sides. Otherwise it just looks...stupid! ;)
I knew the aero-dynamics were off!
That'll show my veteran brother what he knows!
facepalm
Get rid of those red ones and move your rear sight all the way to the back. Also. Your ammo is probably bad and won't group, send it to me and I'll safely dispose of it.
Okay. I'll send them to you one at a time from 100 yards. How's that sound? :)
Id go with a red deot and a 36 yard zero and your done, keep whichever irons you like or work as backups
Yeah those are horrendously innacurate.
It gets you on paper... at like 10 yds. I don't even see how they are so far off since you can spin them and still get the same spot. It will save you the embarassment of hitting the target hanger or someone else's target at least.
tyty o_o7
A rifle I have naught but hand tools and knowledge of civil government are pledged to the cause.
That was me when I first went through marksmanship in boot camp. I couldn’t hit the side of a barn.

Is that a Walther PPQ? Nice 👍
Ye
Thats how my rifle is set up too. I shoot both eyes open and use both sets of my irons simultaneously.
I dual wield my eyes! 😎

I have one of each. lol
Thanks! Sounds good.
Get a OTW Red DOT for $35 and be done bro, leave the 45s on if you like them, you ain’t the Warrior Poet hate to break to you.
I would not buy a 35 dollar red dot. Those are meant for bb guns and will not hold a zero on even a low recoil weapon like an AR.
Sauce- made that mistake.
Funny story, decided to put it on a mosin nagant and boy does that zero jump.
Oh dear. If a red dot loses its zero on the rifle that put millions of motherfuckers in the ground...
You got the wrong brand, most are trash I agree
Sorry, missed the part where it said beginner! Sorry pede!
LUL it's fine. I was prepared for this. I put on my brave face (._. )
I want to just dig my hands in that box of ammo
Yeah! Just I like have! hahhahahahaa.... ha...
runs off to do that why have i not done that yet i'm a fucking idiot
SAVED! SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVED!
Holy shit that's some straight linear math. Shit! Thank you for that.
Awesome glad to help. This is why targets have 1x1 grids.
Get an eotech with the 3x magnifier GG
My bro also recommend Eotech or RMR.
...
BRO IS THAT YOU?!???!

Wow - I’m down in cincinnati. Nothing down here to speak of.
Lebanon is close! Check out their website, it will tell you availability by store!
920 B. Columbus Avenue Lebanon, OH 45036 (513) 970-4900
This is so awesome! What a great start you have haha!
Thanks!
My bro is military. He was giving me advice the entire time I was purchasing and had it afterward. I'm lucky I have assistance.
Thanks for the pointers.
Is that eye-balling it? That sounds like what a Kentucky would do. Plus a bottle of bourbon nearby.
We all have to start somewhere 🙂
God I wish I could afford an ar right now. I had my eyes on one a good six months ago but bills and family problems come first. So I had to wait and now I cant afford one. Their all going up because suddenly everyone is buying guns ( a good thing for sure but sucky for me personally) I'm not gunless, I have my 40 caliber handgun and a mossberg but still.
Even a Ruger 10/22 can kill large game. If I didn't have my AR15 I would have gone for that as a backup. Plus, you can hunt with it.
I'll check it out thanks
Start at 25 yards with a yuge target (pizza box).
Then move out to 50 y. That's your 50 AND 200. It'll be a few inches high at 100y.
Too much call of duty
If you have any Military affiliation, go to expert voice and sign your ass up for sweet deals on scopes and shit. Hopefully that will save you some cash. Get your physical fitness ready bud.
Naw. That's my brother. He's the expert. lul
Backup backup sights
Thanks mang. I'll do my best o_o7
