I see the news of the US/Europe, everyone being so strict: calling the police on people for going to the beach or because they drove alone to a national park to walk their dog. Queueing to gain access to supermarkets, lockdown for months and months, etc.
In Japan what did we do? We wore masks, shut down schools, and 30% of people worked from home (lots of Japanese companies will not let employees work from home or let them take paperwork home). Then there was one two week period of "unenforceable lockdown" in March. People wear masks in Japan all the time anyway (hayfever, influenza, etc)
After that? Nothing, just the masks (as usual). Lots of people still work from home, but you should see Tokyo/Yokohama during the weekend. Everyone goes to parks, malls, eats out at restaurants, students doing homework in Starbucks, crowds at baseball, etc. I was eating out 3/4 times a week until recently (my kitchen sucked).
It's so strange living here in Japan.
