The only thing I've found that works is to hold the middle. So you argue a middle ground perspective (which is often taken as extreme to them now a days but at least it doesn't open things up directly to warfare against you).
I'm not sure what else works though and to me, holding the middle is sort of a cop out. But I've seen it work.
