By bending the knee and admitting that AZ is still open, they show their viewer how 'balanced' their reporting is. It is a front to show them as impartial, when anyone with an inelegance high enough to tire their shoes knows otherwise.
By walking back now, they reassure their viewers that what they have watched over the last 4 years has been the 'truth' because they have the integrity (kek) to correct their errors when they realize them. This in turn offers the appearance of credence to all of the previous lies they have reported in the past.
ex: "There is obviously evidence of Russian collusion or CNN would have walked back their statements"
ex2: "Obviously bad Orange Man is literally Hitler, or CNN would have retracted those statements".
There will more than likely be a few more of these minor corrections at which CNN will then point to as examples of how 'honest' they are. Its very effective on stupid people which is why it is being pushed on CNN viewers.
