BJJ is great for one on one, but the last thing you wanna do when they have friends around is be on the ground. IMO it should be more of a supplement for if/when the fight does go to the ground. A 'stand up' art should be studied as well, even if its just boxing.

100% of fights start standing up, though. BJJ is okay if you aren't outnumbered, but I'd vote for Judo (or original jiu jitsu) if you're a beginner, especially if you can find a school that does street self defense as much as tournament stuff.
Else, something like Wing Chun for smaller people, as it focuses on leverage over strength and gets opponents down without you needing to remain entangled with them- good for when you are outnumbered.
