A VPN is a tunnel. Your phone or computer’s internet traffic goes into the tunnel immediately after leaving your device. The other end of the tunnel is at the VPN provider’s servers.

This means that your internet traffic is hidden from whomever is providing your connection to you — be it the WiFi router or your cellular carrier. As soon as it hits the tunnel the data is scrambled so even if they snoop they can’t figure out what was said.

Recommendations for a pc vpn? Mobile? Is it truly necessary

ExpressVPN or NordVPN are the two big names in VPNs right now, and they have apps for mobile too. There are many good ones. The important part is to activate it before activating whatever thing you want to protect. So, always turn on your VPN (AND LEAVE IT ON UNTIL DONE) before connecting to a site, or starting another service, etc...

Expressvpn is based out of Hong Kong and is therefore now comprimised. Pick something else.

I can't find anything confirming that, only that they had some operations there.

NordVPN is very good and often on sale (sometimes ~$2.8 / month if you chose 3-year package).
It also has an very important option to chose "obscured server", which actually scrambles your IP enough, that it even works in Communist China.
I'm not sure about the difference to "normal" VPN connection.
NordVPN is both for mobile and PC and you can have about ~5 devices with your account logged in.

Thanks bro. Will look into later in week What’s the deal with logs? Always heard that as drawback? Secondly, what stuff can people access if they were trying to snoop? Emails? Uploaded pics/vids, it’s all interesting to me

Logs I'm not sure. They advertise of course that they don't keep any. I would always expect though that government intelligence do still know who you are.

However I'm 99,9% confident that big tech (google), criminals (bank fraud), and other people without backdoor access are prevented from ever finding out who you are.

If someone snoops, it's still pretty difficult to actual read plain-text content (e-mails and messengers are mostly encrypted). Websites you open are possible to read. Uploaded pics or on your device is not possible, as Cloud services encrypt your credentials. And your local storage is not accessible (except if you have some app or setting which openly shares pics/vids between devices within same Wi-Fi network) However, always expect hackers to be smarter than I am - so nothing is impossible. Better VPN than sorry.

NordVPN had a leak last year because of poor security practices on the part of their IT department. I wouldn't trust them.

Linus Tech Tips are still advertising PIA. I don't know what the opinion we have around here of LTT is.

Thanks for that info. Didn't know that. Looking into that PIA then

Mulvad. You don't even sign up. They give you an account number after you send them 5$ and that's how you log in to different devices.

I use Private Internet Access.
