I think there are a couple of things to keep in mind. 1: reddit upvotes on top posts are flubbed.
This, sadly, is true. As you can watch preferred stories get a sudden burst rivaling Biden's votes in some districts. Our upvotes are accurate, and are a result of individual accounts that have logged in.
When VPNs are used, each visit to the site is seen as a unique viewer. What this means is that individual viewer counts across the spectrum are inflated. But since they are inflated on all sites, our ranking among all sites is pretty accurate. Logging in fixes the VPN problem.
The traffic is there - check alexa - just most people come here for news, not to make an account
