An Audit looks at the whole process from beginning to end - looking for any weak points throughout the entire voting system - to include a recount/ballot canvassing.

Canvassing ballots is a very detailed recount, where vetted representatives of each party scrutinizes each ballot by hand. Think Florida hanging chads, circa November 2000

I don't exactly know the distinction between an audit or canvassing but if I were to venture a guess, it would be that an audit would review the election processes and the canvass would look into the actual vote itself (whether there were discrepancies in registered party and actual candidate voted for) and attempt to correct this if there were any clerical/machine errors
