His CPs were on the front lines. That’s what made him different. You don’t send your fucking colonel to assault a bunker because they are too valuable. This is why Marine officers don’t wear shiny brass rank insignias in combat, they wear black like enlisted so they don’t stand out because a sniper knows to pick off the officers first, and for good reason. This is why enlisted Marines will shield their O-2 platoon commander from bullets with their own bodies. I have a multitude of issues with officers and the difference in how they are treated, especially with how resistant the military and specifically the Marine Corps are with handing out medals for valor, but you greatly underestimate how important moral and motivation are within a unit and how it effects combat effectiveness, and that falls squarely on the shoulders of the CO.
Marines may eat crayons, but we know a good leader when we see one, and the manner in which we follow that Marine officer is dependent on how that leader is viewed in the unit.
Of course it’s fair, but this isn’t a logic or reason discussion. We are openly sycophants for Chesty and our history. No shame when you have the history of pure badassery that the Marines have, going all the way back to Tun Tavern. If it pisses off the soldiers here, good! Any one of us Marines would still take a bullet for a soldier and vice versa. But this shit is fun.
Good talk but I gotta go. DoorDash just delivered a 24 pack of crayons and it’s lunch time.
