If there is a mismatch, they start from scratch. Votes and tabs are sent to the state capital under guard and reverified. Voting requires ID verified by election workers and representatives from all parties. Voting via mail requires notarization by a public notary or two independent witnesses. Any attempt to cheat is a felony with stiff penalties.
Just cause they can mark ballots doesn't mean they can't easily be throw out. Check the ink, check the printer patterns. It's not like the machine is using a pen to fill in the circle
Well... the machines can alter the vote... so we're kind of in a pickle unless we have some other methods.
