Something that crossed my mind during that massive outage that just occured. Is it possible that those who now have the keys to the kingdom could pressure our American tech companies, forcing them to agree to get services turned back on? Or a show of force that they can shut us down whenever they want?

These days I just don't believe in coincidence anymore.

Make sure you are stocked up, I just have a sinking feeling we really will have to fight for our freedom. For most of us that will just mean weathering the storm and for others it may be more literal (large city hubs?).

Tin foil hat here. I admittedly don’t know for sure but here’s my understanding. I think you’re referring to ICANN. So I believe the main concern here is control of the most authoritative name servers. Those name servers propagate across the whole internet and point you from the domain name to the actual addresses of the servers. Control over DNS can be useful for all kinds of attacks. Also when you combine that with things like LetsEncrypt for issuing trusted certificates (they use DNS to verify you are in control of the domain before automatically signing your certificate). Those two things combined with proxies could be hard for the average person to detect and all kinds of attacks can be done on unsuspecting people.

That's right they can easily bombard ddos attacks which is what we saw last night. Who knows, questioning everything lately....
