What makes a professor at a university? Go to college for some BS major, can't get a job in the real world. Blame your lack of education, get masters degree, can't get a real job. Figure get your Phd and be a perpetual student to buy you more time. End up teaching impressionable 18year olds on how America sucks. I have seen it many times. Not all professors, I know 2 personally (both very left wing) who had real world jobs, but many are what I first described.
Sounds like you're describing a dude I know who got a BS of studying Egyptian history. Couldn't get a job. So he went back and got his masters in Egyptian architecture history. Still couldn't get a job. So he finally got his PhD in Egyptian history, architecture and every tangent of the topic. He still couldn't find a job so he became a college professor teaching the topic to a new set of students who will never be able to get a job.
