The trick that works for me is not quitting. That's how I stopped smoking :)
I never said this is it, no more. It was a compromise to my brain to prevent that anxiety from starting by saying, "lets just not buy anymore for a few weeks but I will still bum some off friends socially". Eventually it became once every few months for some occasion. Now I just have a single cigar for my Bday every year.

That's exactly how I lost a ton of weight... I didn't stop eating food, I was just reasonable about it. I splurge every now and then as well.
