I would find a metro parking garage and park there. When you said you were driving down I assume you mean from north, most likely you will hit I270 before the beltway, if that's the case I would try Shady Grove Metro. There is a large parking garage there and is free to park on weekends. You would then take the metro to Metro Center.
If coming from the south via I95, then I would park at Franconia/Springfield Metro. Another large parking lot and you can take the blue line to Federal Triangle.

No problem. The metro is super easy. The only tricky part is resurfacing from the metro. There are usually multiple exits. I'll take a look and see if I can tell how Metro Center is.
Also just keep in mind that the fare is distanced based, and you pay when you enter the station and when you leave the station. They have pretty easy to read charts so that you can quickly figure out how much you'd need to put on a card, though

If you're taking I-95 south, you'll hit 495 and go towards Bethesda/Rockville and get off on 270. If you keep going north on 270 you'll see signs for Shady Grove metro station
I'd say metro in if you can. Parking sucks in DC and it's expensive. You're probably on the orange/silver line so just take that in the direction of New Carrolton/Largo to get into the city.

No worries! It's easy - one end goes into VA, the other ends in MD. All the lines are color-coded as well. To go into the city, look for the trains heading towards MD. I think the stop closest to Freedom Plaza from the orange/silver line would be 'Federal Triangle'. To go back to the hotel, obviously look for the trains heading into VA (Vienna - orange line, Wiehle/Reston - silver line).
I don't believe they'd be able to get the orange and silver lines from Pentagon City or Crystal City which would be closest to their hotel in Arlington. Those are on the yellow and blue lines. That's why I suggested to go the Blue line below that will eliminate the need to switch trains. Metro Center is about 2 blocks I think from Freedom Plaza, but don't mind being corrected. I just want to make sure they get the best directions possible. :)
Don't be too intimidated by the metro. It really is easy. You should be able to get the Metro at Pentagon city. I don't know how well you get around so I don't want to recommend how to get to the metro. But once you get to the metro at Pentagon City you will take the blue line to Largo Town Center (you aren't actually going to Largo, but that will be how you know which direction). Then you will get off the metro at the Metro Center Station.
