I don't wear a mask unless someone who works in the store I'm shopping in comes up and tells me I have to put one on. My response is to calmly put down my basket or leave my cart and simply walk out of the store. When stores have more pressure from customers than from the would-be evil overlords, this silliness will stop.

And yes, I live in a state where wearing a mask is mandated indoors in public areas. The truly ridiculous thing is, I'm not even sure what the "penalty" is for disregarding this Governor's mandate.
