Sometimes praying is a good meditative way affirm what your goals are. You may be unsure if anyone up there heard you, but at least you did… So I would assume

I came from a religious family, became an atheist for awhile, didn't work out. Now I make a deal with god (if there is one or more) that as long as I am a free American, I will pray, help those in needs, and be a good guy in general.
But not too much talking with religious zealots. I respect their beliefs, but I want to keep my option of not playing favoritism towards any one god.
