Graduated from a major university about a year ago and work in sales. However throughout the past year I’ve become very interested in “being the change you want to see” even if it’s just a local level.

My only issue is, my degree and experience is in sales. I have pretty good people and leadership skills I’d say but I’m completely clueless how I can even set myself up to try and crack into the system.

Does anybody have any advice as to where to start if I want to be involved and work in a role where I can have a say in my local government? Any advice is appreciated pedes.

If you're interested in local office, familiarize yourself with the elected positions. Attend city council or school board meetings. Read past transcripts and the local paper to become familiar with the issues.

If you do decide to run, you'll need to find financial backing or get to know a local GOP party branch and see if they'll back you. Local elections don't cost a ton, but you may need money to file as a candidate, hire workers to get your message out, create signs, etc.

check what jobs are available in your township, county, or state to start off with. Just get in anywhere then work up.

Some county positions you just fill out a form and pay a small fee and you're on the ballot. Irrigation district board and things like that.

I once worked for a US state government, over the course of a decade or so. Most of my fellow bureaucrats either had no degree or random ones, like "anthropology" and "liberal arts".

Walking into any state government position with a degree puts you on the fast track to supervisory positions, unless the position requires specialized knowledge or certification. "Upright, breathing and not embarrassing your betters" are the most desirable qualities for a potential civil servant.

Do us all a favor. Don’t become swamp. Keep your nose clean so no one can blackmail you. And don’t take money or favors from the wrong people just to get re elected. Always be true to the people, and you’ll go far like Trump.

All the Pelosis out there started off wanting to “be the change”. Just remember, don’t become SWAMP. And everything you do should better the PEOPLE.

Just remember, Trump himself did reality shows and real estate before becoming prez. You want something, go get it.
