Patriotism in general has been slowly sapped from the country.
I don't know if you remember, or even if you encountered it, but the excuse pushed around that started the decline of something as simple as the Pledge of Allegiance were people trying to be philosophical and saying "Pledging allegiance to your country sounds like North Korea or Nazis!"
"Pledging allegiance to your country sounds like North Korea or Nazis." That's lazy, bs way of thinking.
It's the value that you're pledging allegiance to. North Koreans stand for their "supreme" leader, Nazis stand for their "superior" ideology. Americans stand for freedom and equal justice under law.

Lazy way of thinking for a lazy group of people, makes sense
