When they took over, they led a nationwide de-Christianization campaign. Mobs stormed Notre Dame and removed or decapitated statues of saints. These were replaced with a statue dedicated to Liberty (went full Orwell with the name). They renamed the cathedral the" Temple of Reason" Orwell again: these were fanatics and crazies. The Sans Culottes were even crazier. Robespierre started the Terror by among other things having their leaders slaughtered. This isn't unlike Mao's military suppressing the fanatical students during the middle phase of the Cultural Revolution, when it started to look like the astroturf was turning into real grass.
But of course the burning of Notre Dame last year was completely unrelated to all of this. No arson here, folks, no Islamist plot. One French official suggested that when restored it should be turned into an oversized airport chapel where people of all faiths (i.e., Muslims) could worship. Even before the Muslim invasion (planned and carried out by treasonous leaders ) France had thrown away its cultural heritage, most of all its religion.
