Hmm, I think the picture is flipped. My son (lefty)hand not politically, taught himself to play a right handed guitar by flipping the guitar upside down. Twenty years later he still plays like that and he's quite good.
I play lefty. That guitar is strung traditionally with the low E on top. Many bass players will just flip a right hand strung bass upside down and play it that way. Some guitar players .. like your son.. will do the same but it is rare. I hung out with Bonnie Raitts brother once, he plays that way. I can play a righty upside down but much prefer my lefty guitars.
I'd prefer a lefty too is I was left-handed. We offered many time to buy our son a lefty guitar, but he said he was too used to the way he plays to change.
