I ain't gonna cut him any slack, yes, the airlift was great, but in the end he was caught with his pants down. He was POTUS in immediate post WWII world with communism on the rise, he could NOT afford to fuck up.
I didn't realistically expect him to invade the CCCP (which to even be feasible would need to be done immediately after finishing Germany), but I expected - by context, and by past experiences, like the airlift itself, that he'd be aware of the need of well mantained armed forces, instead of "winging it". If anything, we are lucky it was a localized proxy war.
