It was in 2004. So more than 10 years ago, sorry. Target came out with a policy of no solicitation so banned the bell ringers. Apparently they did eventually give $1mill to Salvation Army, but for a lot of people like me, much appreciated but too late. In my area, quite rural, the SA doesn't just give Christmas and Thanksgiving to people in need, they attend structure fires where folks lose everything, pay for hotel rooms, feed, clothe them, even help them find another place to live. The organization itself, I'm with you on that, but locally they do a lot of tangible good. And yeah, the bell ringers are tradition, like Toys for Tots.
