Eh, I grew up in California. If anything, I'd say that Gen X kinda fell in love with the presented IDEA of the Soviet Union. Never actually bothering to look in to what went on in the Soviet Union or the horrible things the governments in the East Bloc did. Nope. Just fell head over heels because, "It sounds like a nice idea, though!" They passed on this, "it would be a nice idea" mindset to my generation (millennials) through the Public School curriculum, at least where I lived. A LOT of the 'EdUCatIon' I received on history was from either VERY angry middle aged do-nothing Feminist-y type women, or dudes whose testosterone levels were questionable, if non-existent. They were hoping one thing that would stick most important over all - America, bad. Socialism, good!
I'd say it worked, at least for a few. We have more than a few Socialists out here parroting the same basic talking points I heard growing up in CA, so.. defund public schools?
