I'm not getting played, I know that Trump has never associated with white supremacists. I also know that white supremacy is a minuscule threat compared to communist ideology and its infiltration into the media, academia, and increasingly the corporate world. In fact a lot of white supremacists would probably be happy living in some all-white group in Montana somewhere and aren't a threat to anyone. The same can NOT be said about collectivists and communists. They want the whole country, without exception, and most of them want the whole world. And I definitely do something about it, including explaining Trump's position and history with minorities. Also historically, I explain that Hitler was indeed a socialist, just of a slightly different breed than Stalin was, and he was by no means "far right" or representative of conservatism. Most people I talk to about it understand what I'm getting at.
I'm purely speaking to the optics here. Most swing voters are uninformed people, don't watch the news, they tune into the debates maybe and see some attack ads and that's it. They don't bother investigating the media's false claims about Donald Trump or any other Republican or any conservative. Trump's answer to that question, I think he could've done better. To idiots, let's just call them that, it might've come off as "evasive" rather than if he just straight up condemned them in the most extreme way possible. That's just my opinion of course, and I don't have a crystal ball or a gateway to an alternate dimension in which he answered differently.
All I know is that I try to put my mind in the most uninformed state when thinking about swing voters, undecided or politically inactive voters--of whom there are millions--when analyzing these debates or other high-profile events that they're likely to watch. And that informs my view of optics in a political campaign, as it specifically pertains to swing voters.

From a moral standpoint, you're right. From an optics standpoint, you're wrong. I know two people who refused to vote for Trump based solely on his personality. Most swing voters are uninformed. I won't say stupid, because one of these two was a CPA and the other was a neuroscientist. They were both good people but Trump's sometimes aggressive nature turned them off. But they would've otherwise agreed with him on the issues, which I discussed with them.

I love Donald Trump. I gave him $100. I'm supporting him even now, when a lot of other Republicans have abandoned him.
That said, he didn't do things perfectly, this includes optics. He did amazing in his first term, no question. That's why he got a landslide. But it wasn't a fifty state landslide like Reagan. Reagan had an endearing quality about him that Trump doesn't have. Trump LOVES this country and has exceedingly high energy, higher than Reagan. But even Trump has acknowledged in interviews that his personality is a weakness for him, including acknowledging it in the town hall he had (the duelling one at the same time as Biden's). Were he more Reganesque in demeanor, he could've easily won those two voters I mentioned, and likely millions of others. We all still would've voted for him, too.
