I don't believe there's any chance at a war, but you should definitely purchase a firearm just because they're fun. If you have kids or plan to someday, then teaching them how to shoot is a great bonding opportunity.
Operating a firearm is something I think just about everyone should know how to do right next to changing a tire, using a soldering iron, and growing some basic vegetables. Not because of some end of the world scenario, but because they're handy skills that are enjoyable to develop under normal circumstances.
