Years ago I used to play poker for a living. Picking up tells from people is a huge part of the game. I was at a table for a bad beat jackpot one time, the hand went like this:

Preflop raises back and forth between two players, I fold preflop. Flop comes A K 4. The same two players raise back and forth again until the raises are capped. At this point I’m assuming one of them has KK and the other has AA. Turn comes 9 (a blank, couldn’t have helped either of them) but they’re still raising back and forth. River comes K. Final board is A K K 4 9. One of the two goes all in, the other instantly calls. First guy flips over KK. Other guy throws his arms up in anger. He was sitting right by me and didn’t know about the bad beat jackpot. As quickly as I could I told him if he has AA flip it over, don’t muck. He looks at me and flips over AA. The bad beat made him $45,000 richer. I got table share ($4,500), the guy who won the hand got $22,500. Including the two people in the hand, I was the only one who saw the bad beat jackpot coming because I was paying close attention the entire hand. What does this story have to do with anything, you may ask. The only two people technically in the hand right now are GEOTUS and joepedo. But I’ve been paying close attention and my gut, much like in that hand, is telling me Trump has a royal flush and is just trying to get as many chips in the middle as possible now. Worry not pedes, hold the line. And never bet against President Trump

As a non-poker player, can you explain to me how the bad-beat jackpot worked? I think that the final situations were four of a kind kings vs. three of a kind aces? And that because the ace thought he was going to win but got hit badly by the kings, he got a jackpot?

The bad beat is really good hand losing to really good hand, usually four of a kind losing. But it had climbed high enough that it lowered the bar to AAAJJ. The last card gave the first guy KKKK and the other guy (who was winning the whole time until the last card) AAAKK. The person who loses the bad beat hand is the jackpot winner, the person who wins the hand gets a half jackpot payment, and the rest of the table gets 1/10 jackpot payment (at least at the casino I was playing at)

Got it—thanks! That's a really cool mechanic.
