I don't think it would be impossible. How about this:
Each voting machine has a unique label such as a serial number.
Each voting machine has a highly accurate clock, synchronized across the world.
You enter your vote and press the button.
It prints a physical piece of paper for you with your choices, with the serial number of the machine, and the exact time you made it. Along with that, a QR code, or bar code, or big number which is an identifier for the vote.
Each state maintains a database connected to the web. You can any time you can log in, enter your code and check that your vote was recorded correctly, and that the machine serial number and voting time are correct.
In addition, election inspectors should be able do query searches on votes and which machine it came from at what time. If it appears there is some funny business, it could be advertised and cause voters in that district to check their votes.
Any in-person voting fraud could be quickly discovered this way.
We should of course never do mail-in ballots again. Only absentee ballots which must be requested.
