My fellow Pedes, the Cold War and subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union was a cleverly constructed psyop meticulously crafted to create the illusion of Pinko incompetence. Their intent was to have the free world dismiss the threat posed by communism as a result of our overwhelming military and social dominance post-WW2. However, in reality, their plan was not to win on the battlefield, but rather through embarking on a 'long march' through our most prized institutions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_long_march_through_the_institutions). Through subverting our institutions they achieved one of Lenin's most famous desires; "Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted." - Vladimir Lenin.
We were warned (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQPsKvG6WMI). Yet sadly the mirage of communism has always been a boon for the private-sector incapable intellectual and political classes. These types are drawn to communism due to its amplification of the self worth of the non-productive classes. They believe themselves to be ideologically superior to the capitalist classes, and hold an inherent bitterness stemming from their inability to translate their formal educations into private sector success.
Shortly after WW2 they wasted no time in capitalizing on our collective desire for world peace following the horrors of war. With the help of communist-sympathizing FDR, they enlisted two of FDR's cabinet members; Harry Dexter White (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Dexter_White) and Alger Hiss (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alger_Hiss) to construct the necessary foundations for a gradual subverting of United States sovereignty under the guise of world peace. The two of them served as the architects for the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank - our foremost unelected globalist bureaucracies. Coincidentally the two of them would eventually outed as communists, and eventually convicted as soviet agents.
With the US successfully bought into the mirage of the United Nations, the communists understood that the United States was only as strong as its weakest links (our allies). So long as the communists could subvert enough of the United Nations' allied member-states, it could exert enough pressure to shape the US without the accountability of the electorate.

The two of them systematically sold Australia's rich natural resources out to China and embraced it's expansionist desires.

The above is barely even scratching the surface, however, most importantly the above encompasses examples of communist subversion within each and every one of our fellow member states of the 'Five Eyes' intelligence-sharing alliance. How can we expect this alliance to hold any integrity if its member states have been infiltrated by subversive socialist/communist elements?
We are entering tumultuous times my Pedes, our allies are important, but we must be careful not to fool ourselves into thinking they possess an ideological purity even remotely resembling our own.
The rot of socialism has long plagued our closest allies. Believe me when I say that America is a last stand. We are the final frontier against the specter of communism. No other nation on earth understands our freedoms, our constitution, our division of powers, and our culture. Whilst we cannot turn out backs on our allies, we cannot rely on them to fight this fight for us.
Sadly the comfort of our prosperity has caused many Americans to grow complacent, and the socialistic embrace of our key allies and globalist bureaucracies has pressured many of our fellow citizens to fall victim of the ideologically lazy allure of socialism/communism.
We cannot fault them, we have only ourselves to blame for turning a blind eye and allowing the rot of collectivism ideologies to seep into our sacred institutions.
GEOTUS Trump has taught us how to fight again. For too long we have been paralyzed by the threat of leftist cancel culture. It is time to reclaim our way of life. GEOTUS' victory in 2016 was a sign sent to inform us that America still has a pulse. Whilst many of our compatriots may be lost, We The People, as one nation under God, are not lost yet.
Whatever comes to pass over the coming weeks we must pledge to never give up. We must fight this leftist cancer relentlessly as GEOTUS has done for us these past four years. We can not let his sacrifices go in vain.

Although they are really the same wolf wearing two different costumes, I consider Fabian socialism to be far more of a threat given it's ability to appeal to what we would consider political "moderates" or "center-left". Fabian socialism is the ultimate Trojan horse.

As I understand it, yes.
What we have been seeing playing out within the United States is far more akin to Fabian socialism than your typical Marxist-Leninist style socialism, although it certainly has begun to increasingly incorporate the class-war elements of the latter during the Obama years.
To your second question, sadly communism is a fairly recent by historical standards, even moreso in the globalist era so I am not convinced that there is any historical precedent for countering it in the form we currently face. However, I highly recommend reading The Law by Frederic Bastiat if you have not already (https://cdn.mises.org/thelaw.pdf). Bastiat was a French economist who published this 70 word essay in 1850. He was unique in that he observed both the tail-end of the horrors of the French Revolution, as well as the promise shown by the emergence of the first truly free society (the US), all within a single lifetime. He outlines with great brevity what is perhaps the ultimate boundary lines for the law in a free society. One of my favorite passages:

Interestingly even in pre and post-ww2 US/UK communist sympathizing has been prevalent within our academic, scientific, social, and political institutions.
What concerns me today is that in a globalized economy, it is easy for international communists to lure morally neutral capitalists in with the promise of exponential profits. Many of our corporates today do not seem to be at all concerned about selling our the free world in favor of profit.
