Man, I donated to and voted for Obama in 2008. Was all about Ron Paul in 2012. Donated to and wrote in Bernie Sanders in 2016 (I live in MD, it will never go red). I am still actually registered Democrat and again voted for Bernie in the primaries this year. I know, you can disagree with me about Bernie, that's fine, I get it, not here to be berated about that - and to be honest I really don't know who I would have chosen if it was Sanders v Trump. Unlike most (ex) lefties, I never had this hard on for hatred against Trump. But you bet your god damn ass I voted for Trump this year over Biden.
Point is... I'm an ex lefty. The DNC did this to themselves by rigging primaries. Then the left co-opted BLM and Antifa while simultaneously saying Antifa was just an idea and ignoring their rioting and looting. And now it appears they may have legitimately tried to steal the election. And after the last 5-6 years of watching the left go absolutely insane, I finally understand my parents generations support for someone like Reagan. Trump isn't typical GOP, but I believe he has truly transformed the GOP and if they can keep up and stay in point, well, it may just be time for me to change my party affiliation officially.
Bernie’s position on labor and protection of the American worker from foreign nationals taking jobs via H-1B visas was always right. His opposition to free trade deals was right too. I HATE free trade, free trade undermines agriculture and industry and did so from the moment NAFTA became law. Being a part of the WTO and CAFTA also creates a massive problem with free trade. The TPP, had President Trump not won, would have become law and we would have had our Chinese overlords more quickly. Bernie was also anti-war too.
However, Bernie sold his soul in 2016 for money. He was not like Ron Paul, Bernie was bought and paid for in 2016 and all of his language in 2020 was hollow. President Trump follows Republicanism in what it was like under Robert Taft in the 1950s. Trump’s form of Republicanism is actually over 70 years old. When you say you understand your parent’s version of Reagan Republicanism, you really are understanding Goldwater Republicanism. Barry Goldwater is where Donald Trump derives his Republicanism. Robert Taft is where Trump derives his Republicanism. Embrace the Republicanism of where you maintain peace through strength without war mongering. Embrace practical economic policies of keeping more of your hard earned money instead of allowing the government to piss away your tax dollars. Embrace protecting the Middle Class and Trumpism to provide wealth for all through higher paying jobs and new entrepreneurial industries to make the Lower Class, Middle Class, the Middle Class, Upper Class, the Upper Class, top 1% through hard work and innovation, not redistribution. Embrace protecting the American worker with economic protectionist policies that benefit Americans instead of taking jobs and food away from Americans.
You may be a former Bernie-bro, that’s okay, Trump Republicanism will gladly accept you, I do. Welcome to the party that now chooses America First instead of China First.
Yes! Everything you said is why I liked Bernie (visas, NAFTA) and you are correct about him selling out.
And, practical when it comes down to it... Trump was the first president in like 50 years or something to increase wages for the bottom 50% of America faster than the top 50% in terms of percentage increase. I remember seeing that in a Financial Times article. And his scrapping of NAFTA and brining supply chains back over to America are good moves. Trump's economy speaks for itself.
