Having lived in Europe during the Cold War, your FIL clearly has no idea of the deprivation and suffering endured by Eastern Europe under Soviet rule. All the Soviets did was help knock off a totalitarian rival. If we had allowed them to claim Western Europe as well it would have made them long for the good old days of the Nazis.
