Not really, they were fast compared to everything else that came out that year... but not fast compared to the cars from a decade before.
All the C.A.R.B. shit started coming out in 1972 and was full blown by 1974, by 1977 the cars couldn't get out of their own way.
I had a '73 Olds "grocery getter" and I was able to destroy my friend in his 1974 Trans-Am, just because of emissions crap on the engines.
