Realistically, after a certain age people begin to factor in how many Thanksgivings and Christmases they might have left. One never knows. If you decide to skip a year and then Granny or Gramps kicks the bucket before the next one -- you'll have missed the last chance for a holiday with them.

So really-- the government should butt out and leave that decision to the people involved.
