It's not necessarily because they think white people are "beneath" them. East Asian peoples, especially older generations, tend to be against race mixing, even with races they consider to be equal or "better". They want their grandchildren living in their own country, speaking their own language, involved in their own culture, looking like them etc. I never thought there was anything wrong with that view. And for perspective, I married into an East Asian family as a white person. My in-laws probably held similar views and I hold nothing against them at all and love them immensely and they feel the same way about me.
On the other hand, my in-laws are not Chinese, and Chinese are broadly racist, so there's that I guess.
