In 2017 the Conservative Party of Canada held its leadership race. The top polling candidate was the libertarian, anti globalist, anti establishment candidate Maxime Bernier. Sort of like a French Canadian Rand Paul.

He was leading in the ranked ballot election until the final round of counting where he came second, losing to establishment moderate Andrew Scheer.

Dominion machines.

I believe Bernier was the true winner of that leadership race.

Bernier then quit the mainline Conservatives and formed the populist grassroots People's Party of Canada. With the rump party status they didn't get many votes but they fielded candidates in every constituency and really really pissed off all the leftists.
