That's a good question, I always saw it as the nature of evil. Not that all Democrats are evil people but that the leftist ideas that have ensnared them are evil.
I always thought it was similar to a cult, where it is easy to fit in by saying and thinking the right words. There is no thought required to be told what to do, and you find like minded people so you aren't alone. It appeals to lost angry people, and the cult leaders tell them it is OK to channel their anger at anybody who does not agree 100% with what they are told. They are convinced that the "other side" is less than human and it is acceptable (and praised!) to hurt them and demean them.
