I was stationed at Cecil Field in an A-7 squadron doing FOD walkdown the morning Challenger blew up. We could see the contrails it was a sick feeling. Went to Readyroom and TV was covering it. Ironically one of our pilots had been accepted to NASA and he said this meant the program would likely shut down for a long time and thus he would likely never get to go as they wouldn’t need as many even when it started back up way later. And sure enough he got cancelled. Felt so bad for him. I’ll never forget that day.

Sad day all around.
