look at the books that the germans burned during hitler's rise to power. freud, hirschfeld, rosa luxemburg. there should be a list on wikipedia. then check out the frankfurt school and their influence on the post war era

It's a pretty fun case study to trace the history of the frankfurt school and, separately, the history of the rise in American leftist progressivism. Fascinating, really, when you look at the timelines.
