I think a lot fewer bad things would happen if people knew this type of punishment was readily available. Definitely would cut down on repeat offenders!

George Washington had to deal with deserters during the Revolutionary War. Men had tried to abandon their duty, after taking their oaths. He had a gallows built, to hang them. One of his officers said to him "General, you can not do this!" Washington turned to him and said, "No, I MUST do this." After those executions, no further men attempted to betray their oaths.

It seems barbaric, but it prevents more problems by punishing the ones who have taken actions that warrant punishment.
